When selecting an oversized resin zipper, the first decision is often between #20 and #30.
Both offer a distinctive chunky appearance, but their physical proportions can lead to very different design outcomes.
At YGZIP, we compared actual zipper samples to help designers and sourcing teams understand the differences.

1. Real Sample Measurements
| Dimension | #20 | #30 |
|---|---|---|
| Chain width | Approx. 14 mm | Approx. 26 mm |
| Overall tape width | Approx. 48 mm | Approx. 70 mm |
| Puller assembly examples | 52–70 mm | 120 mm |
These figures represent the illustrated samples and should be reconfirmed when approving production specifications.
2. Why Chain Width Matters
Chain width affects the visible proportion of the zipper.
A 14 mm chain can provide a bold appearance without completely dominating the garment.
A 26 mm chain creates a much more exaggerated visual statement.
For designers, the decision should begin with the desired appearance and the garment’s overall proportions.
3. Why Tape Width Matters
The zipper tape provides the sewing and attachment area.
Our illustrated #20 sample has an overall tape width of approximately 50 mm, while the #30 sample measures approximately 70 mm.
This difference can affect pattern design, seam allowances and the placement of nearby garment details.
Before finalizing a pattern, request a physical sample and confirm the required sewing margins.
4. Choosing the Puller
Our #20 sample collection includes plastic puller designs and a zinc-alloy thumb-style option.
The #30 sample demonstrates an especially large plastic puller assembly.
Puller selection should consider appearance, grip, weight, compatibility and attachment strength.
5. Does a Bigger Zipper Mean Greater Strength?
Not automatically.
A zipper’s strength depends on multiple factors, including the molded elements, tape, slider and overall construction.
For demanding applications, we recommend establishing appropriate testing requirements before bulk production.
6. Which Size Should You Choose?
Consider #20 when:
- You want a bold zipper without the most extreme proportions.
- Your garment has limited space for zipper tape.
- You want to explore different colors and puller designs.
Consider #30 when:
- Maximum visual impact is a priority.
- The product design can accommodate wider tape and a larger slider.
- You are developing experimental or highly distinctive oversized detailing.
Both options require application-specific evaluation.
